We are a leading developer, enabler and supplier of real time embedded operating system technology for the bespoke hardware marketplace.

- Management Team Biographies
Ian Smith – Managing Director
As Managing Director Ian provides Abelon with experienced business and technical
leadership, developed though many years at the leading edge of the communications industry.
Prior to helping start Abelon in 2002, Ian was the main architect for the Spider Systems
Primary Rate ISDN implementation and became Director of WAN Development, leading up teams
developing ISDN, Frame Relay and other WAN technologies.
Along with Duncan and Adrian, Ian founded the Ascend Communications R&D facility in the UK,
based in Edinburgh and became Director of R&D for Lucent Technologies after the merger with
Ascend. Whilst at Lucent he was project manager for the MAX 3000 remote access server and
Definity Remote Office VOIP PBX projects.
Ian has a BSc (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
from Heriot-Watt University, an MBA from the University of Edinburgh,
and is a Chartered Engineer.
Duncan Walker - Director
At Abelon, in common with other senior staff, Duncan is highly technically focused.
He works hands on, leading system architecture, integration and design projects.
Duncan joined Spider Systems in 1986 from a background
of WAN protocols gained in Edinburgh Regional Computing Service.
There he continued to work with WAN protocols eventually becoming
a founder staff member of the Spider Software Business Unit. He
led the SpiderX.25 and SpiderISDN development team, moving on
to manage the Development and Engineering Services groups. In
Shiva, he was the Director of Special Engineering, managing customisation
projects for major customers. He joined Ascend Communications
in 1998 where he managed the European sustaining engineering group, a
role he continued to fulfill after the merger with Lucent Technologies.
Duncan has a Bsc (Hons) in Computer Science from Edinburgh University.
Adrian McKie - Director
Adrian focuses on major client and project management. In this customer facing
role, Adrian also provides systems requirements, architecture and design consultancy.
Adrian worked on Protocol Testing and standardization at the National Physical Laboratory.
From there he moved to Spider Systems, where he was a founder staff member of the Spider
Software Business Unit. He led the SpiderOSI development team and ported SpiderStreams
and SpiderTCP to Windows for Microsoft and Reuters. After the merger of Spider and Shiva,
Adrian moved to a software architecture role for the Integrator and LanRover products.
For the next four years Adrian was the chief architect for Lucent's next generation
Voice over Packet Media Gateway, leading a team of 70 software and hardware development staff.
Adrian has a Bsc (Hons) in Computer Science from Stirling University.
